Comodo EV SSL Certificates Protect People From Phishing

Mozilla Developer Center recently announced that Firefox 3 Beta 3 is now available for download. This marks an important milestone in the widespread adoption of new browser security measures such as Extended Validation ( EV ) SSL Certificates to protect site visitors from phishing sites. The BETA release is an important first step in enabling millions of Firefox internet visitors to be protected in online transactions. The official, full release of Firefox 3 is expected later this year.

With its ability to recognize Comodo EV SSL Certificates, this new version of Firefox enables Internet users to see the reassuring green address bar. The green bar signals to consumers they have reached a legitimate site verified by Comodo, providing end user protection of sensitive personal information, such as passwords, bank account numbers and Social Security Numbers. The Mozilla Foundation announced that the goal of the enhancements to Firefox was largely related to improving security in online activities. Other enhancements include faster page rendering, more personalization through one-click bookmarking, and better downloading - including a progress indicator in the status bar and anti-virus checks.

New Firefox Beta Patches Memory Leaks, Adds Security

Tuesday night, Mozilla announced the availability of Firefox 3 Beta 3. As with earlier betas of the number 2 browser, this release is only intended for developers and testers, not for general consumer use.

The browser’s developers have made about 1,300 changes to the software, including better security, bug fixes, performance enhancements, and user interface improvements.

Security was a priority for the release. Now users can click a site’s icon to see whether their connection is protected from eavesdropping. Also, new malware protection warns you when you land at sites known to install malware and perform other nefarious actions. The browser now supports Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, stricter SSL error pages, and includes anti-virus integration in the download manager.

SSL is a Lousy Band Aid

Security practitioners love SSL, and with good reason. It is well designed with support for multiple encryption protocols, and is easily reconfigured in case any should get cracked or outdated. It is an incredibly useful tool, protecting transactions as they cross otherwise insecure channels such as the Internet. It’s also great for certificate-based bilateral authentication, provided of course you actually have the cash and personnel resources to maintain it.

If anything, SSL is too well implemented, and people think it covers all their needs, like a giant security blanket. They forget there is much more to security than just using SSL.
